Activities

The Wallowa County branch of AAUW meets the second Monday of each month from September through June.  Most meetings are held at the Fishtrap House, 400 E. Grant Street in Enterprise from 7 to 9 pm.  Meetings include a business meeting and a program of interest to the group.  At the June annual meeting, we plan for the coming year while enjoying social time and a potluck dinner.

Branch projects focus on local scholarship programs for women and/or girls, community education, and fundraising to support these activities.

Scholarships:

    • tuition assistance for women who have been out of school for some time and wish to return
    • partial fee payment for women who wish to advance by earning a GED–high school equivalency diploma
    • tuition assistance for women in their third or fourth year of higher education, studying Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, known as “STEM” awards
    • STEM awards are also available to high school senior girls who are excited about these areas and plan to pursue higher education in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Public Policy:

In election years, AAUW partners with other community organizations to sponsor candidate forums for the community to meet public office candidates and learn about their views.  AAUW invites all candidates to participate and moderates the discussion to encourage a more informed voting public.

Literacy:

AAUW sponsors part of an annual lecture series put on by Fishtrap, Inc., a writers and readers organization which promotes “clear thinking and good writing in and about the West”.  Through the lecture series, Fishtrap brings the community together to engage in meaningful discussions on a variety of topics of local interest.

Awareness:

The members of AAUW participate in local events, such as the Enterprise Bowlby Bash in July, to promote awareness of education for women and its importance.

Fundraising:

The branch holds at least on major fundraiser annually to support its programs.  Previous events have included a fun and successful community dance party on New Year’s Eve, used book sales, etc.
